Walmart+
Walmart+ (Walmart Plus) was launched during my tenure with the company as Walmart's first premium subscription service, designed to boost customer loyalty and compete with Amazon Prime. It offered exclusive benefits, including free shipping, free home delivery, and Mobile Scan & Go, which allows customers to pay for items as they shop in-store, skipping the checkout lines.

The Goal
At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Walmart+ was fast-tracked by executive leadership as a strategic priority to enhance the in-store customer experience and streamline services across multiple channels. With teams still transitioning to remote work and struggling with consistency due to the lack of face-to-face collaboration, the challenge was magnified. Walmart needed to quickly create a unified visual identity and a portfolio system to manage thousands of UX and digital design assets - produced both in-house and by agency partners - to ensure a cohesive and timely rollout. The goal was to overcome these remote collaboration barriers and develop a streamlined approach to support the seamless launch of Walmart+ across the company’s entire ecosystem, including web and app interfaces.

The Role
As a Design Program and Creative Operations Manager for Walmart, I was asked to audit the current workstream and then take ownership of all Experience Design (XD) deliverables for the Walmart+ initiative. Collaborating closely with Emmy-winning Creative Lead, John George LaCroix, and a highly efficient team of project managers, my role was to ensure alignment across cross-functional teams - still adjusting to remote work - spanning design, copy, product, development, architecture, and engineering. Given the complexity of the initiative, I implemented a structured approach to manage an unprecedented volume of digital, web, and app assets for Walmart+, ensuring collaboration and consistency within a fast-paced environment and tight deadlines. My leadership in design program and operations bridged gaps, creating a streamlined process that ensured cross-business alignment for a program Walmart had never executed before.
The Results

Implementing a new design program operations framework led to significant improvements for Walmart+. A post-rollout survey showed a 45% increase in design output, driven by a more efficient project management structure that reduced revisions and enabled on-time delivery despite compressed timelines. Once roles and responsibilities were clearly defined, priorities set, escalation channels established, and additional copy support resourced, productivity soared by 92%. Communication between teams also improved dramatically, with a 78% reduction in swirl, misaligned feedback, and back-channeling. Regular syncs and optimized feedback loops helped maintain consistency and collaboration, even in a remote setup due to the ongoing pandemic. These results were crucial for the successful launch of Walmart+, despite the unprecedented challenges. While I served as the Design Program Lead for the initial rollout in September 2020, it truly took an entire team of talented people to make it happen. This is where strong collaboration made all the difference.

☑︎
Re-engineered current design workflows for Walmart+ by bifurcating UI/UX and Digital Design assets into separate streams, transforming what was previously a cluttered, one-size-fits-all process into a modular, scalable system. This new structure allowed for greater adaptability in a rapidly changing environment, giving teams the flexibility to design with precision and speed across both web and app platforms.
☑︎
Onboarded a hybrid Agile-Waterfall system, where the flexibility of Agile met the reliability of Waterfall. By creating a process that adapted to both short-term sprints and long-term visions, this approach was a game-changer, preventing the program from getting bogged down in traditional workflows while also making sure that key milestones were never missed.
☑︎
Implemented Service Level Agreements (SLAs) not just as a guideline, but as an adaptive framework that evolved in real time to match the unpredictable rhythms of the remote work era. Instead of rigid, one-size-fits-all deadlines, these SLAs became dynamic checkpoints, allowing for iterative feedback loops and faster decision-making across teams.
☑︎
Redefined communication strategies by eliminating back-channeling and siloed feedback, creating a single, shared voice for all stakeholders. This wasn’t just about "streamlining" communication - it was about creating visibility, ensuring that every team member, from design to engineering, had access to the same, real-time feedback, transforming cross-functional teams from a collection of voices to a harmonious unit.
☑︎
Built a scalable framework for Walmart+ that became the template for future projects across the company. It wasn’t just about launching a service under tight deadlines - it was about creating a dynamic, adaptable design ecosystem that could scale as the business grew, ensuring Walmart+ wouldn’t just launch but thrive, evolve, and scale seamlessly in the face of future challenges.
